Vocal octet Roomful of Teeth and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) premiered This might also be a form of dreaming, composed by Roomful of Teeth vocalist Caroline Shaw, on June 11 at the Ojai Music Festival. The "Mystic Hour" program also included Leila Adu's Alyssum, performed by the Calder Quartet and harpist Bridget Kibbey, as well as ICE flautist Claire Chase performing An Empty Garlic by Du Yun.
Shaw's new work features text by poet Claudia Rankine and was commissioned by the Ojai Music Festival. A brief spoken exchange at the cycle's center proposes that the handshake can be a poetic act of both asserting and offering oneself to another.
This on-demand music is part of a partnership between Q2 Music and the Ojai Music Festival to share live recordings from the festival dating back to the 2012 season.
